has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back across the China Sea for the last large scale surrender at Hong Kong<br>where today warships of the Royal Navy right at anchor in the harbour.<br><br>The first landing parties go ashore prepared for a peaceful occupation<br>but ready for any Japanese treachery.<br>In the dockyard area they meet trouble in the form of snipers.<br><br>At first, the Japanese seemed determined to fight it out,<br>but after some accurate British target practice<br>they think again.<br><br>Meanwhile, a party of Japanese officers leaves the Peninsula Hotel<br>for a safer and less comfortable place of internment.<br>As they are driven away<br>it&#8217;s only too obvious that the rising sun<br>has gone permanently into reverse.<br><br>The city of Hong Kong waits expectantly<br>for the surrender to be made complete at Government House<br>The Commander in Chief of the colony Rear Admiral Harcourt<br>arrives with Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser to accept the surrender.<br>Then follows the now familiar routine,<br>as the Japanese delegates make their appearance<br>headed by General Okada the former Garrison commander.<br>The only difference between this and previous surrenders<br>was that the Japanese took much longer<br>to paint their signatures on the document,<br>possibly to delay the inevitable disgrace of surrendering their thoughts.<br>General Okada deferentially hands his sword to Admiral Harcourt.<br>With far less politeness,<br>Admiral Fujita hands his over and almost forgets to bow.<br>Admiral Harcourt winds up the proceedings with his own signature<br>making an official end to Hong Kong years of suffering.<br><br>Outside the Government House comes the simple and moving ceremony<br>of hoisting the white ensign,<br>while in the harbour below the Navy gives a 21 gun salute.<br><br>Inside the city,<br>the first joy of freedom is over<br>as the people begin their task of getting back to normal.<br><br>The jobs of carrying up,<br>particularly the dirtier jobs,<br>are very rightly reserved for the sons of heaven<br>who are given no chance to think twice before doing it.<br><br>The aftermath of surrender in Hong Kong,<br>is an excellent sign that Japan will be made to play her full part<br>in the work of rebuilding the Far East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
