ST. PAUL’S COLLEGE.
FIFTEENTH YEAR OF AGE CELEBRATED.

The fifteenth year in the life of St. Paul’s College was completed and celebrated at the annual prize distribution last night. The Bishop of Victoria presided over a large gathering of visitors and Sir Claud Severn handed out the awards.
In presenting the annual report, the Rev. A.D.Stewart, the Principal, said:
To-night we complete fifteen years of the present school’s existence in St. Paul’s College and at is satisfactory to be able to report further advance in several directions.
Both enrolment and attendance have shown improvement. On December 4 there were 485 names on the roll and 472 in actual attendance, both of which are the highest figures yet recorded. The average attendance has also shown improvement being 88% for the whole year and over 93% for the last four months. Also 47 students have had an unbroken record for the year, of those seven have now attended for two full years without missing a single day while two others, Loh Chi-hing has done the same for three years and Chan Ping Kam for four years.

THE STUDIES.
On the whole good work has been done in all the classes which has been reflected in the results of the recent Examinations, especially in the Junior Division in which we had 78% passes, a great advance on last year. One noticeable improvement has been a fortnightly inspection of exercise books, with marks given for neatness, and a Challenge Shield presented to the best class, which has led to very satisfactory results. Sports have, as in the past, played an important part in the school’s activities. We were particularly gratified at winning for the second time the Challenge Shield presented by H.E. the Governor to the school winning most points in the Annual Schools’ Sports, and also at winning the Relay Race in the same sports. We had many times been second but had never before won the race. Neither football, Volleyball nor basketball figured much in league matches during the past year. Swimming, too, was as popular as ever during the summer and though no notable swimmers were produced, we closed the season with close upon one hundred who had passed the swimming test.

EXTENSION OF THE SCHOOL.
In the way of bricks and mortar we note a further step in advance and it is with feelings of great satisfaction that we see the beginnings of the enlargement of the College Chapel and Wu Ting-fang Hall which we have long needed. In fact it is just four years ago that Sir Claud Severn referred to his extension, on just such an occasion as this, and it was largely through his kind offices that the preliminary stages were taken whereby we obtained the necessary land. It is impossible to express how much the school owes to the steady plodding work of the members of the staff who undertake with such ready cheerfulness the “daily round, the common task.”

THE MORAL SIDE.
The moral and religions side of the work, which to some of us figures most prominently, has been kept well to the fore. Several of the boys have been baptised during the year and one, we rejoice to say, has decided to enter the Theological College, with a view to being prepared for Holy Orders. He makes the fifth of our students to take this step. Much useful work has also been done by the students. The free school at Causeway Bay has been kept going largely through the subscriptions of the boys and a Christians entertainment was also given out of the same fund. The free night school, carried on in these buildings, by the Hostel boarders has had another successful year. During the summer holidays a Summer School was held in the premises, in conjunction with a number of others carried on in different parts of Hongkong under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A., and several of the Staff and boys gave up the best part of a month to teaching and giving a happy time to small boys and girls off the streets. Altogether 125 children were enrolled and they were taught to read Chinese, drill, basket work, needle work and, what was perhaps as good as anything else, how to play games.
Another new venture this year has been the forming of a troop of Scouts in the school under Scoutmasters C.L.Becher and S.P.Wong.

THE LATE MR. BANKER.
It is not usual to sound a note of sadness in a report such as this, but we cannot leave unmentioned the loss so recently sustained by the school in the Home-call of Mr. George Banker who for the past four years has been a member of the College Council and firm friend of the school. When the Extension Fund was started for building the Hostel, he not only consented to be the treasurer but also collected subscriptions and himself subscribed largely to the fund.
To another member of our College Council, one who from the earliest days of the school has been a staunch supporter and friend, Mr. S.W.Tso, we extend the must hearty congratulations of the whole school on the will earned honour he has just received in the form of an Honorary Degree at the University. This school owes a deep debt of gratitude to Dr. S.W.Tso over a period of many years and we are glad of the opportunity of making public acknowledgment of it, and all the more because his life exemplifies what we never cease to emphasise in this school, and that is that the best life is the life spent in service for others. If we thought that in this school we were equipping boys only for money making and worldly success we should have small satisfaction in the work, but each evidence of a willingness to give up for others, of a desire to serve others, gives an added impetus to our joy in the work and an increased stimulus to press forward to the ideal we have set before ourselves in our school song, “to send from these walls a noble band, who will work for the good of their country.”
Before presenting the prizes, Sir Claud Severn said they had at last begun to build the extension of the chapel and the hall to be built underneath it, which will be called that fine old gentleman, the late Dr. Wu Ting-fang. Sir Claud had the honour of meeting him at Canton shortly before his death. He was extremely pleasant and courteous, as he always was. They had escaped a danger during the last year or so, and that was of having their beautiful site dissected by a wide road. He knew it created a certain amount of consternation to think that they would be separated into two islands, as it were, and that all these fine buildings would disappear. Now, he saw a beautiful new building on the left, and presumed that in the future they would see further new buildings. He was perfectly certain that with the advancement they had been continually making it would not be long before they should see other class-rooms arising to take the place of a building which, to some extent, had outlived its purpose.

\u5728\u9812\u767c\u734e\u52f5\u524d\uff0c\u65bd\u52f3\u7235\u58eb\u8868\u793a\u7d42\u65bc\u770b\u898b\u79ae\u62dc\u5802\u5f97\u4ee5\u52d5\u5de5\uff0c\u800c\u79ae\u62dc\u5802\u4e0b\u5c64\u7684\u6703\u5802\uff0c\u5c07\u4ee5\u4e00\u4f4d\u4ee5\u6545\u8001\u7d33\u58eb\u4f0d\u5ef7\u82b3\u535a\u58eb(Dr. Wu Ting-fang)\u547d\u540d\u3002\u65bd\u52f3\u7235\u58eb\u6709\u5e78\u65bc\u535a\u58eb\u5728\u4e16\u6642\u65bc\u5ee3\u5dde\u62dc\u8a2a\u4e86\u4ed6\uff0c\u4ed6\u662f\u4e00\u5982\u65e2\u5f80\u7684\u548c\u85f9\u8207\u6709\u79ae\u3002\u9019\u6240\u7f8e\u9e97\u7684\u5b78\u6821\u65bc\u53bb\u5e74\u66fe\u51fa\u73fe\u91cd\u5927\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u6703\u88ab\u6536\u5730\u4ee5\u5efa\u8a2d\u9053\u8def\uff0c\u7235\u58eb\u4e00\u76f4\u64d4\u6182\u8457\u5b78\u6821\u6703\u88ab\u9053\u8def\u4e00\u5206\u70ba\u4e8c\uff0c\u7cbe\u7f8e\u7684\u5efa\u7bc9\u7fa4\u4ea6\u6703\u7531\u6b64\u906d\u53d7\u7834\u58de\u3002\u6b64\u6642\u6b64\u523b\uff0c\u7235\u58eb\u770b\u8457\u5de6\u908a\u7684\u65b0\u5efa\u7bc9\uff0c\u5c31\u4f30\u8a08\u65e5\u5f8c\u6703\u770b\u5230\u66f4\u591a\u65b0\u7684\u5efa\u8a2d\u3002\u4ed6\u975e\u5e38\u80af\u5b9a\uff0c\u96a8\u8457\u5b78\u6821\u7684\u767c\u5c55\uff0c\u5c07\u6703\u6709\u66f4\u591a\u6559\u5ba4\u7684\u843d\u6210\uff0c\u4ee5\u4ee3\u66ff\u73fe\u6642\u5df2\u8d85\u51fa\u5176\u7528\u9014\u9650\u5236\u7684\u5efa\u7bc9\u3002
