OUR ST. GEORGE’S DAY PARADE
H.E. The Governor’s Speech:

The Commissioner, The President, Scouts and Cubs-
I have a message for you from the Chief Scout. It reads as follows:-
“I send warmest St. George’s Day greetings to all Scouts. Let us take new courage to fight against the evil things that are abroad in the world to-day”.
I have just presented to Group Scoutmaster Raymond Yue the Gilt Cross for Gallantry. We are all very proud of him. Many of you I know would have acted in exactly the same brave manner as he did had you been situated in similar circumstances, therefore you all of you share in the honour that has been paid to him.
During the past year the Scouts of Hong Kong have acquitted themselves well. It has been a year in which alas there have been many fires, the most serious being the Wing On Fire. In all cases the Scouts have given most valuable and useful service. But at the same time you have given equally good service on more hum-drum occasions such as the Trade Fair at Kowloon when a number of you assisted in controlling the crowds. It always gives me great pleasure to see the Scouts on these occasions, particularly as they look so smart and scoutlike.
The fundamental thought in all Scouts should be the desire to help one’s fellow men. That thought is developed by the character training that you get in the Scout organization, but the thought itself is not enough, for you must also be able to put that thought into practice and that is where your practical training comes in. To give an instance of what I mean. There may be some unfortunate person unable to swim who has fallen into the sea. You want to save him but unless you know how to do so the best thought in the world will be of little avail. You should therefore not neglect your training.
The past year has shown that you are of good character and that you have benefitted by your practical training. I am proud of being your Patron and Chief Scout. Keep up the good work.
