OUR ST. GEORGE’S DAY PARADE
The President’s Speech:
Of all the associations which I know of in Hong Kong none gives so much pride and satisfaction to me as your President, or indeed to the community, as the Boy Scouts Association.
You have high ideals not only in play but in work. You have a record of useful active service which you have rendered with high enthusiasm. Many think that active service is service in war; but you, like the Knights of old, live up to your motto and are at all times prepared for service and loyalty in peace as in war. You well deserve still another motto – that of the Prince of Wales – I serve.
The Knights of old did not start as knights; they went through a hard and strict training of discipline, loyalty and unselfish sacrifice until they won their spurs. You as Scouts are training to win your spurs as the future citizens of Hong Kong. When you grow too old to be Cubs, Scouts or Rovers you will still retain as citizens the principles and ideals of Scouts Once a Scout – always a Scout.
Hong Kong needs people trained and disciplined in well-doing like you. You may be British, Chinese, Portuguese, Indian or any nationality – but with the same uniform, the same badge and the same code you are fused into one band of brothers to-day which will become the band of united citizens of the future whose loyalty will be to Hong Kong.
It is significant that to-day is St. George’s Day. St. George is the Patron Saint of England. He was adopted as their emblem by the Crusaders who for centuries fought the infidels who were in possession of the holy city of Jerusalem. You have been the traditional picture of St. George, armed and mounted, slaying the dragon. He is the symbol of the triumph of good over evil. He was typical of the knights of old who were trained and always prepared to rescue those who were in the toils of the dragon, to relieve distress and to fight evil.
You as Scouts are to-day the inheritors of the ideals and traditions of those Knights. Honour is your high ideal as it was theirs. Your code on which your association is based was taken from the code of the Knights. In these days, as of old, there are still fiery dragons of evil that rear their ugly heads around us. We live in troubled times of war, dissension and distress. It is your mission as Scouts always to be prepared, not only to radiate happiness and do service with your smile and staff, but armed with lance or sword to do battle with the modern dragons of evil.
The English poet, Tennyson, before the Scout movement was formed forty years ago, expressed in verse the mission of the perfect Knight, and it is as true to-day as the aim of a good Scout:
“To reverence the King
To break the heathen and uphold the Christ
To ride abroad redressing human wrongs
To speak no slander, no, nor listen to it,
To honour his own word as if his God’s”.
He also gave as the Knight’s motto these words which I commend to you:-
“Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King.”
