SAIYINGPUN SCHOOL.
DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES.
PRESENTATION TO MR. IRVING.
The annual prize distribution in connection with Saiyingpun School took place this morning, when there were present the Hon. Director of Education (Mr. E.A.Irving) who presided over the ceremony, Mr. Teesdale Mackintosh (Registrar of the Hongkong University), Mr. E.Ralphs (Inspector English Schools), Mr. Forest (Inspector of Vernacular Schools), Mr. A.Morris (Headmaster), Dr. T.W.Pearce, Rev. V.H.Copley Moyle, Mr. U.Rumjahn, Mr. G.P.de Martin and many others.
ANNUAL REPORT.
The Headmaster (Mr. A.Morris) read his report as follows:-
Attendance.- The average for the year under review was 394.7, and the percentage 97.7, which constitutes a record. One hundred and forty-eight, or five-twelfths of the whole school made full attendance, and following the practice of previous years silver badges recording the fact will be presented. This is made possible through the generosity of our many friends. In addition to the foregoing, there are an additional twenty who have made perfect attendance from the date of their admission. All cannot hope to carry off a class prize, or win a scholarship, but an attendance medal comes within the reach of each student. Regularity is the sine qua non of progress. The school has remained full throughout the year and large number hundreds, in fact have been refused admission through the limited accommodation of our present buildings. We look forward hopefully to the opening of our new school, the foundations of which are approaching completion.
Staff.- There have been a number of changes in the staff. Mr. Hamilton went on leave in February last, his place being taken by Mr. A.White, who is still with us. Miss Birt, together with Mr. Yin Chung Yu, were transferred here after the mid-summer vacation, and Mr. Savage commenced duties in December. Messrs. Li Chung Shi, Ng Chee Yan, and Ko Kan Wing resigned; Mr. Leung Yuk Tong was transferred to the Gap Road School, while Mr. Wong Tin Sik returned to the University. Our senior vernacular master, Mr. Chak Pink Ki, was transferred to Queen’s College in September last, his place being taken by Mr. Lai Siu Tsun. The teaching staff now consists of three vernacular masters, six local England teaching masters, and five experienced Europeans. Here, I would like to tender my sincere thanks for the wholehearted manner in which my staff has supported me and co-operated in all that has appertained to the welfare of the school, for we work under trying and exacting conditions – in an industrial area, and on the edge of a busy thoroughfare.
Studies.- The general standard of efficiency has been maintained. Map-drawing, handwriting, English conversation and composition call for special mention. All the students of Class 4.A., thirty-four in number, succeeded in passing the qualifying entrance examination to Class 3, Queen’s College. This is a creditable performance when it is remembered that we had a shortened year, a more searching test, and a higher “Pass” mark,- 60% instead of the 50% of previous years. Class 4 completed the year with 63 on the roll. A unique experience occurred in connection with this examination. Two boys who were in situations left them and returned to school in order to take their “leaving” examination. I mention this incident as it indicates the keenness and the spirit which permeates the school.
Discipline.- The tone and discipline are excellent.
Sports.- While concentrating most of our energies upon lessons, the physical side has not been neglected, and although handicapped for playing ground in the vicinity of the school, we have done well in sport. Football, volley-ball, and swimming are the principal recreations. Our volley-ball team which won the Junior Shield, did not lose a single game and scored to its credit the maximum number of possible points. One hundred and twenty attended the swimming classes at the Y.M.C.A. and acquired the art which they were able to practice further at the launch and bathing picnics, and which are as popular as the time of their inception, nearly twenty years ago. I attach great importance to these outings, for they supplement the teaching of the class-room and bring pupil and teacher into a more intimate relationship, enabling the one to understand the other better.
Scouts.- Through the generosity of our esteemed friend and patron, Mr. Ho Kom Tong, we have been able to continue the activities of our Troop which spent a week in camp at Tai Po Market, at the home of Mr. Mok Ching Kong. There have been field days at Fanling, Shatin, Sheung Shui, and other places in the New Territory. In this connection we have to offer our thanks to Sir Robert Ho Tong, Hon. Mr. Chow Shou Son, Dr. Wan Man Kai, Messrs C.H.Blason, Chan Harr, Woo Hay Tong, and Lui Lai Sang Sang, who have made donations to the camp expenses. Our Scouts assisted in the recent vaccination campaign also. Mr. Leung Yuk Tong, the Scout Master, although transferred to another school, still maintains his interest in the Troop, and is assisted by Mr. Kong Kam Chuen who is on our staff.
Ambulance.- The “Old Boys Ambulance Division” under the able guidance of Sergt. Leung Sui Sang, performed much useful night work during the vaccination crusade, vaccinating 1,832 persons.
Charity.- It is said that “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” and once again our boys were called upon to show their practical sympathy with the parents of a school fellow not so well blessed with this world’s goods, and to give in the cause of charity. The lad succumbed after a few days’ sickness. The last rites were arranged by classmates, the funeral expenses paid by the school, and a substantial sum handed to the bereaved parents. Never have I witnessed a more impressive sight than this funeral procession, wending its way up the road outside, in an orderly, decorous manner, attended as it was by the whole school – masters and pupils. “One touch of pity makes the whole world kin.”
Medical.- During October a medical examination was conducted by Dr. Esler. Numerous “eye” cases were treated and spectacles supplied. Others necessitating operative and indoor treatment were catered for at the G.C.H. to the genial and courteous superintendent of which, Dr. McKenny, we offer our best thanks. The re-vaccination of our scholars was arranged by Dr. McKenny also. To Dr. Tsiu Hin Yeung, of the Western Dispensary, we are greatly indebted. Dr. Tsiu has treated a large number of minor ailments, and scarcely a week passes but that boys are sent to him for treatment.
General.- The school continues to serve a useful purpose as the “Practising School” for the University Education Undergraduates. On Oct. 31st., we mercifully escaped what might have been a serious calamity had it occurred during hours. The nullah which passes under Room I was choked during the unprecedented rainfall of that date, and burst through the floor sweeping everything before it, desks, cupboards, doors, and massive granite coping stones, some of which were washed as far as No. 7 Police Station. We re-occupied this room just ten days ago.
The names of fourteen past pupils appear among the successful candidates at the recent University examinations.
Matriculation.- One, Yau Fung Hon, (Distinction in Physics) went to Queen’s College as an Alan Morris Memorial Scholar. Senior, one; junior, twelve, one of whom, Cheng Iu Man, also holding an Alan Morris Memorial Scholarship, gained no less than five distinctions.
Donors of Special Prizes.- Referring to the donors of Special Prizes a significant and encouraging feature is the large proportion of past pupils and guardians who have contributed this year. Through the open-handed liberality of these gentlemen we are able to supplement our prize list, and make awards other than those for “general proficiency” e.g. attendance badges, that would be impossible otherwise:- Capt. Hall, Messrs. Ho Kom Tong, Yeung Shut Him, Lee Hy San, Hon. Mr. Chow Shou Son, Messrs. Mok Kon Sang, Chan Shan Shek Shan, Im Pun Tak, the late Mr. Ng Sau Sang, Mr. Wu Nam Tin, Messrs. Kwok Siu Lau, Ip Lan Chuen, Lo Chop Son, Ho Fook, U Cheuk Nam, Choy Chong, Choa Po Sien, H Shai Kit, Ip Sau Chi, U Cheuk Sang, Ha Chung Chau, S.C.Pang, P.K.Kwok, Fung Ping Shang, U To Ting, Hu Hi Tong, Ho Leung, Wong Kam Fuk, Mok Ching Kong, Dr. Wan Man Kai, Sir Robert Ho Tung, Chau Tung Shang, Chan Chiu Cheong, So Shai Piu, Choy Kit Sz, Yu King Shu, Li Cheuk Kiu, Li Po Kwai, Wong Chung Lum, Lo Cheong Shiu, M.H.Lo, Ho Iu, Lui Lai Sang, Choy Hing, Chau Chit Hing, Ho Cheuk, Lo Chung Kui, Chan Pak Chun, Lai Long Pak, Ho Ki, Sui Fung, Chan Chan Nam, Tam Kwok Choy, Yeung Chung Kan, Tam Ho, Ho Wing, Chan U Chun, Ng Fai Hoi, Li Yew Ting, Mr. and Mrs. Li Ping, the Ying Wah Book Shop. The following gentlemen have made substantial donations for the special purpose of paying the fees of impecunious students – a meritorious action:- Messrs. Yung Ip Shang, Lau King Tsing (a former pupil), Ma Dow Nam, and Ma Tong Ching.
In conclusion, to those who have not gained awards I wish to give a few words of encouragement and consolation. In your class one must be at the top and another at the bottom, but if the bottom boy has striven and done his utmost, he has done his best: that is all that the most exacting teacher can expect; Never despair, plod steadily on, you may yet win the race.
SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS.
The Hon. Mr. Irving then distributed the prizes. From the lengthy list we take the following winners of Scholarships:-
Class 4A.- Pong King Cheung (Alan Morris Memorial), Li Po, Hui Pak May, Chan Wai Man, Lun Wai Ling and Leung Chau Kwong (Government, Full); Tam Kam Iu and Wong Yue Sun (Government, Half).
Class 5A.- Chan King Man (Government) and Chan Mo Yau (Ho Kom Tong).
Class 6A.- Yau Pak Tung (Government) and Leung Mo Shun (Ralphs).
Class 7A.- Kong Sau Yuen (Government) and U Wing Ki (Mok Kon Sang).
Class 8A.- Ng Shu Sun (Government) and Tang Kun Sang (Mok Kon Sang).
PRESENTATION TO MR. IRVING.
At the conclusion of the distribution of awards, the Headmaster said, “Boys, Prize-givings are occasions of joy and rejoicing for most of us, but I have to sound a note of sincere regret to-day. Mr. Irving, out Director of Education, the gentleman who has just given you your well-merited prizes, will not preside on any of our future Speech Days. Last year we were honoured with the presence of Mrs. Irving, who graced our proceeding before leaving for Home, and bidding the Colony farewell. Mr. Irving is leaving Hongkong soon, retiring from Government service. For the last nineteen years I have known him as the head of our Education Department. He has watched with paternal care and solicitude our school grow, our efforts in the cause of education, and, as you say in Chinese, ‘has been a good friend of this school’. I take it as a great compliment to our school that he himself is here to-day, but at the same time I am sorry that he will not be here to see the inauguration of the new Saiyingpun School in the details of which he has greatly interested himself. Shortly we have to wish him good-bye and God-speed. This parting time comes to each one of us. Before the year is out, some of you will have written your last exercise here, worked your last problem, passed your last examination. A few weeks ago I said farewell to 63 of our senior boys – boys unmatched anywhere – and I am confident that these occasions are times of genuine regret to each one. In wishing you ‘Adieu’ Sir, be assured that you carry with you to England the good wishes of all of us – pupils and staff. To Mrs. Irving please convey our best wishes also. May God of His infinite goodness grant you long life, health, and happiness to enjoy with your family the years of your retirement in the Old Country. Now, Sir, on behalf of our school and as a memento of this occasion, I have to ask your acceptance of this souvenir. I will now read the address.”
Accompanying the address were a brooch for Mrs. Irving and cigar box for the retiring Director of Education. The address, which was beautifully inscribed by the one of the pupils, Sung Chun-wu, read as follows:- “Presented to the Hon. Mr. E.A.Irving, Director of Education, on the occasion of his retirement from the Government Service, as a mark of appreciation and esteem for the great interest he has always manifested in this School.- Staff and Pupils of Saiyingpun School, Hongkong, January 24th, 1924.”
MR. IRVING’S SPEECH.
In his reply, the Director of Education expressed his thanks and appreciation for the presents given him. He said he must say a few words to compliment the Headmaster for the very satisfactory condition of the school as illustrated and made clear to the public in the report though it was known to his Department without the report at all. Looking back over a period of 23 years that he could remember the school, he could testify to the extraordinary changes which which come within his personal experience. He remembered clearly the first day of his coming there. The school was housed in this building, though it then had not the upper storey they were gathered in that morning. The total staff consisted of three Chinese masters, and the Headmaster was Mr. Fung Fu, who was now retired on pension and had been an example of the proverb that “pensioners were long-lived” and he had set him a good example.- (Laughter). At present the staff consisted of fifteen teachers, six of whom were English. He thought Mr. Morris said fourteen in his report. He hoped he had not mislaid one of them.
Mr. Morris (interrupting):- Myself.- (Laughter).
Continuing, the Director of Education said that in the interests of justice he must point out that the success of the School really commenced from 1906 when Mr. Morris first joined it. The period of 1901-1902 might be comparable to the butterfly’s egg. The next 10 or 20 years might be comparable to the chrysalis stage. He would not trace the progress of the school to the butterfly stage because that had yet to come. But he ventured to say that this school was going to take a great step forward shortly. He did venture to prophecy two things about it – it would become the most important school in the western district and it would also become the best practising school from here to Hankow and even to Peking. He might live long enough to hear at Home that this prophecy had been fulfilled. In conclusion he thanked them very heartily in the name of his wife and in his own name for the presents they had given them. His wife would have pleasant recollections of the school (she had distributed the prizes at the school a year ago), and he thought the brooch they had given her would be for her a lasting souvenir. Referring to the cigar box which was his present, Mr. Irving expressed the pleasure it would give him in the future to make use of it. “I see myself going to my sideboard where this box will occupy a place of honour, and I shall take a cigar from it and it will be smoked ceremoniously on the altar of old acquaintance.”-
(Applause).
The usual cheers brought the proceedings to a close.

Hall)、何甘棠先生、楊實謙先生(Mr. Yeung Shut Him)、李海山先生(Mr. Lee Hy San)、尊敬的周壽臣先生、莫幹生先生(Mr. Mok Kon Sang)、陳常石珊(Chan Shan Shek Shan)、嚴本德先生(Mr. Im Pun Tak)、吳壽山先生(Mr. Ng Sau San)(已故)、胡南天先生(Mr. Wu Nam Tin)、郭少流先生(Mr. Kwok Siu Lau)、葉蘭泉先生(Mr. Ip Lan Chuen)、羅策山先生(Mr. Lo Chop Son)、何福先生(Mr. Ho Fook)、余卓嵐先生(Mr. U Cheuk Nam)、蔡崇先生(Mr. Choy Chong)、蔡寶善先生(Mr. Choa Po Sien)、何世傑先生(Mr. H Shai Kit)、葉修智先生(Mr. Ip Sau Chi)、余卓生先生(Mr. U Cheuk Sang)、夏沖秋先生(Mr. Ha Chung Chau)、彭秀全先生(Mr. S.C.Pang)、郭先生(Mr. P.K.Kwok)、馮平山先生(Mr. Fung Ping Shan)、余道庭先生(Mr. U To Ting)、胡希同先生(Mr. Hu Hi Tong)、何良先生(Mr. Ho Leung)、黃金福先生(Mr. Wong Kam Fook)、莫清剛先生(Mr. Mok Ching Kong)、尹文楷醫生、何東爵士、周東生先生(Mr. Chau Tung Shang)、陳昭昌先生(Mr. Chan Chiu Cheong)、蘇世標先生(Mr. So Shai Piu)、蔡傑思先生(Mr. Choy Kit Sz)、余景樹先生(Mr. Yu King Shu)、李卓翹先生(Mr. Li Cheuk Kiu)、李寶貴先生(Mr. Li Po Kwai)、黃忠林先生(Mr. Wong Chung Lum)、羅長壽先生(Mr. Lo Cheong Shiu)、盧先生(Mr. M.H.Lo)、何耀先生(Mr. Ho Iu)、呂勵生先生(Mr. Lui Lai Sang)、蔡興先生(Mr. Choy Hing)、周捷興先生(Mr. Chau Chit Hing)、何策先生(Mr. Ho Cheuk)、盧頌舉先生(Mr. Lo Chung Kui)、陳璧全先生(Mr. Chan Pak Chun)、黎朗柏先生(Mr. Lai Long Pak)、何奇先生(Mr. Ho Ki)、瑞豐先生(Mr. Sui Fung)、陳燦南先生(Mr. Chan Chan Nam)、譚國才先生(Mr. Tam Kwok Tsoi)、楊仲根先生(Mr. Yeung Chung Kan)、譚豪先生(Mr. Tam Ho)、何榮先生(Mr. Ho Wing)、陳有全先生(Mr. Chan U Tsun)、吳輝海先生(Mr. Ng Fai Hoi)、李友庭先生(Mr. Li Yew Ting)、李炳先生(Mr. Li Ping)及夫人(Mrs. Li Ping),以及英華書局(Ying Wah Book Shop)。
