ROUND THE CAMP FIRE
(By Patrol Leader.)

Scouters and Scouts will be pleased to learn that Mr. S.A.Sweet, Commissioner for Kowloon, who has been confined to bed with malaria, has recovered and is about again.

The Assistant Commissioner for Training (Rev. N.V.Howard) returned during the week from Peking, where he has been spending a pleasant month, on holiday.

A moonlight swim, arranged by the 7th Hong Kong (King’s College) group, was held on Tuesday night, and proved a great success. Eighteen boys, under A.S.M. Chak, traversed to Kai Tack Bund, Kowloon City, in a motor boat, kindly provided by one of the members, Scout Sin Chi-wing.
Activities are being carried on as usual, and the S.M. Mr. Ferguson, is expected to return from the North shortly.

Three boys of the 1st Kowloon Troop, Cecil Davey, V.Millington and F.Jorge, passed their First Aid tests in the Second Class Badge on Thursday. After a few games, the boys adjourned to the Church Hall, where the Troop Chaplain (Rev. W.Walton Rogers) gave a short but very impressive talk on loyalty and honour.
To-morrow (Sunday) several of the boys are entering their First Class cooking tests. A trip to the Camphor Woods will probably be made.

The 1st Hong Kong Sea Scouts are making preparations to shift into their new headquarters, which will probably be situated on the top floor of the newly erected Seamen’s Institute, in Gloucester Road, overlooking the harbour. Patrol corners have already been booked, it is understood by the four patrols, Buffalo, Sea Lion, Seal, and Seagull. The Chaplain of the Institute is the Rev. Mr. Waldegrave, Commissioner of Hong Kong Scouts.
The Pinang Gazette has commenced a Scouts’ corner, allotting a little over two columns to the movement. It is titled The Scout’s corner by “The Wolf,” and contains a report on the activities of the 1st. Province Troop.
“The Wolf” writes:-
“I hear that the number of Scouts who have submitted their names for the First Class Badge Tests, is negligible when compared with the number of Second Class Scouts there are in Penang. This is not promising, and Scoutmasters would do well if they were to encourage their Scouts to take the Tests. The Tests are quite simple and there should be no reason why Scouts who claim to have passed their Second Class Badge Tests should not go in for them. However, it is pleasing to note that the Scouts are practising hard for the Tests. Good luck to those who are going in for the Tests, and I hope to be able to record a good number of First Class Scouts in these columns at the end of the year.”

MESSENGERS FOR SCIENTISTS.
The York Boy Scouts Local Association has been asked to supply 30 or 40 Boy Scouts to act as messengers during the annual meeting of the British Association at York next September.

TO VISIT GODDOLLO.
On his return from the Norwegian National Scout Camp at Mandal next month, Mr. Hubert Martin, the International Commissioner of the Boy Scout Association and Director of the Boy Scouts International Bureau, will attend the National Scout Camp in Roumania and the Sea Scout Jamboree in Poland. He will also visit Goddollo in Hungary, the site for next year’s World Jamboree.

ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER ONE SPOT.
Edward One Spot, formerly of the old 18th (Killarney) Calgary Troop, is an A.S.M. of the new Sarcee Indian Reserve Scout Troop. A.S.M. One Spot is one of the first Indians in the Canadian West to hold an A.S.M.’s Warrant.

THE CHIEF SCOUT TALKS.
Marksmanship.
(By Lord Baden Powell)
I have often praised Scouts for being good marksmen with the rifle, just as I have praised others for being good boxers. I don’t think that because he is a good shot with the rifle a fellow will therefore get bloodthirsty and want to go to war, any more than when he has learned to punch and counter with his fists he will want to go knocking people about.
In both cases it is a matter of knowing how to defend himself of other people against attack. A man who cannot do this is not a man – to my way of thinking.
Where I have particularly seen the want of being able to shoot is in Africa and the East. Both in Rhodesia and in Natal I have seen peaceful British settlers murdered, together with their wives and little children, simply because they did not know how to handle a gun in their own defence.

Mind you I have seen these things happen and many of you marksmen Scouts will have good reason to bless the day when you learned to shoot.
[Note:- The Marksman’s Badge is a difficult one to obtain, and involves a great deal of training.]

(Lord Baden Powell))
