MOTOR BUS DEATHS.
DRIVERS CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER.
Proceedings on charges of manslaughter were continued at the Central Magistracy yesterday against the two Chinese motor-bus drivers involved in the collision in the New Territories on April 6th which four passengers (one a Boy Scout) were killed and several injured.
Mr. Wadeson watched the case in the interests of the Bus Company. The first accused the driver of bus 1204 was defended by Mr. A.E.Hall.
According to the evidence of a Chinese Seaman who was in bus 1314 the other bus had just passed a bridge when the accident occurred, his bus crashing into it at a speed of over 30 miles an hour.
When asked how he estimated the speed, witness explained that the motor buses in Hongkong generally travelled between 18 and 20 miles an hour and bus 1314 was going twice as fast that day.
Second defendant: The approximate distance between the Star Ferry pier and Un Long is twenty six miles. The accident took place about 2.30 and therefore I could not travel as fast as you allege.
Witness: You drove slowly at Yaumati and furthermore the bus stopped outside the Company’s garage for water and petrol.
Mr. J.Smith, acting Chief Engineer of the Kowloon-Canton railway, said that he examined the buses after the collision and from the nature of the damage concluded that they must have been travelling at high speeds. For a bus of the type of the damaged ones, the safe speed would be under twenty miles an hour, though he had seen them doing the best part of 40 miles.
The hand brake of bus 1204 was broken and covered with dust indicating that no attempt had been made to use it. The foot brake was entirely out of order and obviously had not been adjusted that day.
As regards bus 1314, Mr. Smith said the front axle had been dislodged from the springs on either side, while the right front wheel had been badly shattered. The hand brake was in good working order, and though not on, appeared to have been recently used, but the foot brake was in the same condition as that of the other bus.
The case was adjourned.
