MOTOR BUS DEATHS.
MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE FOLLOWS.
IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHS.
From the police report this morning, it is learned that a man was killed outright in the motor bus collision in the Ping Shan district, New Territories on Sunday. His remains were subsequently removed to the Kowloon mortuary. Added to the deaths of the little girl and the Chinese boy-scout who, as reported in yesterday’s issue, died on their way to hospital, this brings the total number of deaths to three.
It is understood that the two men who were arrested by Traffic Sergeant McWalter, on Sunday evening in Ping Shan, will be charged with manslaughter today. This means that they will appear before the Magistrate to-morrow. If evidence is given in the Police Court it is unlikely that an inquiry or inquest will be held as witnesses’ statements would then be recorded as evidence in the manslaughter case. The two men arrested are alleged to be the drivers of the buses who are said to have decamped with the takings after the collision.
Photographs have been taken by the police and it is expected that they will be of material importance at the hearing.
The exact locality of the bridge where the crash occurred is given as Lam Ti.
It is likely that two other licensed motor drivers will appear before the Magistrate to-morrow. They were concerned in an accident at Tsin Wan also on Sunday when a bus is said to have come off the road and turned over. A charge of failing to report an accident will be preferred against both drivers, one man will face a charge of driving the bus without the permission of the owner and the other with allowing him to do so. All the buses are stated to belong to the Chun Hing Co. which operates the service to the more remote parts of the Territories.
FUNERAL.
To-day the funeral of the boy-scout named Ho Kwan-yui took place. He was about 14 years of age and belonged to the Saiyingpun School Troops. With the other scouts in the out-going bus he was going to camp at Un Long when the collision occurred and his skull was fractured. This morning, many scouts assembled at the Kwong Wah hospital to pay their last tribute to the deceased comrade. Mr. A.Morris, headmaster of the Saiyingpun School also attended the funeral.
The body was brought over from Yaumati to the business premises of the uncle Mr. Ho Mo-san, 97 Connaught Road West. Here were assembled representatives of all the boy scout troops in the Colony, both Chinese and European. Among those present were the Acting Commissioner, Mr. Champkin, who brought a message of condolence form H.E. the Governor; Mr. White, Secretary of the Boy Scouts’ Association; Mr. Kirk of the Wanchai Troops; Mr. Beecher of the St. Paul’s Troops; Mr. Chek of the Wesleyan Troop; Mr. Fenton of the Diocesan School Troop; and Mr. Braga of the St. Joseph’s Troop.
Wreaths were sent by all the Troops as well as by the Acting Commissioner and the Headmaster and Staff of Saiyingpun School. A letter of sympathy was sent by the Treasurer of the Boy Scouts’ Association, Mr. Blason.
Leaving the premises of Mr. Ho Mo-san, the cortege proceeded behind Fly Point Battery where the last tributes were paid, a bugler sounding the “Last Post.”
The coffin was taken to the Tung Wah Morgue, Pokfulam whence it will be sent later to Kiungchow in Hainan where the boy’s parents reside.
INJURED BOY RECOVERING.
The brother of the deceased boy who was injured in the same accident is now in the Kwong Wah Hospital suffering from a fractured pelvis. He is making good progress towards recovery.
