Victory celebrations in Hong Kong
have been going on ever since the Japanese surrender,
but festivities reached their climax with China’s National Day,
the double 10th.
Every street was transformed by a blaze of colour
from thousands of ceremonial banners.
Many of them carefully hidden from the Japanese
during the bitter years of occupation.
For the British forces too,
this was a day of special rejoicing.
Once again, the Navy, the Army and the Air Force,
were on parade in the city from which they’d been absent for so long.
At their March past,
the salute was taken by Admiral Harcourt, the commander in chief.
The double 10th of 1945,
marks the beginning of new prosperity for a great city.
