PRINCE OF WALES BANNER CAMPING COMPETITION 1959.
HELD AT CHAI WAN ON DECEMBER 9th & 10th 1950.
The following is an extract from the Report of the Rev. T.E.Gover, M.A., R.N. Chaplain, Fleet Commissioner, on the Prince of Wales Banner Camping Competition. We regret that lack of space prevents us from publishing the Report in full.
| Camp Chief: | The Reverend T.E.Gover, M.A., R.N., Fleet Commissioner |
| Assitants: | Mr. F.Casemore, R.S.L. of Hong Kong Deep Sea Rover Scout Crew. |
| Mr. H.Hodgson | |
| Mr. W.Morrison. | |
| Interpreters: | Mr. Stephen Wong |
| Mr. Ng Yan Wing | |
| Mr. Ng Man On. |
The Camp assembled at 3.15 p.m. on Saturday, 9th December and dispersed at 5.00 p.m. on Sunday, 10th December.
GENERAL REMARKS
The Scouters are unanimous in the view that it was both a privilege and a pleasure to be present at this Camp. The behaviour and discipline of the Scouts left nothing to be desired; the spirit was excellent; the appearance, bearing and keenness of the boys was splendid. We were very agreeably surprised at the high standard shown. So pleasant was our experience that we deeply regret that the Camp was not of longer duration.
It was a very close contest. The marking is the result of four independent opinions and all the details have been carefully discussed at a conference held subsequently. The two winning Patrols, the 10th Hong Kong and the 1st Hong Kong Sea Scouts, are particularly to be congratulated on a very fine show.
A detailed list of marks and comments on the various Patrols are appended.
| Punctuality: | Four Patrols, the 4th Hong Kong, the 1st Hong Kong, the 10th Hong Kong and the 4th Kowloon, arrived late. | |
| State of Sites: | It is considered that all Patrols started at some disadvantage owing to the very untidy state of Chai Wan generally. They inherited a lot of litter left by previous campers on the sites, and in some cases this was considerable. Particular care was taken at the final inspection, after Camp had been struck, to see that the sites used were left clean. It was very distressing to find that previous campers had thrown unburnt tins into the bushes together with milk bottles, lemonade bottles, rope, string, paper etc. etc. | |
| Hygiene: | It is feared that this left a good deal to be desired and attention is drawn to the following points: | |
| (a) | With the exception of one Patrol all tents were firmly sealed at night and ventilation was practically non-existent. This was remedied on the spot. | |
| (b) | With the exception of one Patrol some, or all, members of each Patrol were sleeping in clothes which they had worn all day. This was also remedied on the spot. | |
| (c) | Some Patrols had no Grease Pits. Where they did exist the “thatch” was not always effective. Only two Patrols marked the site of their Pits at the close of the Camp. | |
| (d) | In some cases dry rubbish and unburnt tins were put into Dry Pits. These should have been burned. | |
| (e) | Large numbers of Scouts washed in the morning when fully dressed, which is deplorable. | |
| (f) | Toilet gear, and very often damp at that, was stowed among clothing. Towels should be hung out to dry and air. So should bedding. | |
| Tents: | We felt that some of the tents were rather large for a Patrol of six for one night, and entailed unnecessary effort in getting them there. Tents were pitched well, but knotting in this connection was not always good. The Sea Scouts, as sailors, should have done better here than they did. In one or two cases guys were untidy and proper hitches were not used. | |
| Camp Fire: | Items by Patrols, Scouters and Interpreters were of a surprisingly high standard, but a certain reticence on the part of some of the Chinese Patrols to join in choruses etc. was noticed. This was possibly due to the fact that they were unfamiliar with them. It is suggested that they have Camp Fires more often and extend their repertoire. | |
| Gadgets: | A characteristic of the Camp was the surprising lack of Gadgets. Two Patrols had none at all. | |
| Axemanship: | Generally speaking, all Patrols need instruction in the care and use of an axe. This can be turned from a useful article into a dangerous weapon. Particularly it is to be noted that: | |
| (a) | Axes should always be masked when not in use and not left lying around. | |
| (b) | Axes should not be used as mallets for knocking in tent pegs etc. | |
| (c) | They should be carried properly. | |
| (d) | An axe will be quickly ruined if, when cutting wood, the ground, or, worse still, a brick is used as a block. | |
| Food & Cooking: | The food storage was, for the most part, adequate but the boys should be taught to keep it off the ground and covered. It was a pity that tinned food was in evidence so much in the case of two Patrols who brought practically nothing else. The cooking was of an extremely high standard, and all are to be congratulated. The menus in some cases were very well thought out. |
